Jon Meyer is up bright and early on weekdays, anchoring Newswatch 16 This Morning with Mindi Ramsey. He also takes WNEP viewers on a journey once a week through the station's On the Pennsylvania Road segment.
Jon started at Newswatch 16 as a reporter in June, 2003. His first job at WNEP was as the Luzerne County beat reporter. He then anchored the weekend evening newscasts for six years before moving Monday through Friday to Newswatch 16 at 5 and 5:30. In 2022, Jon started setting an early alarm clock and joined the morning team.
After Mike Stevens took another step into retirement, Jon also took over the On the Pennsylvania Road segment, finding stories about the many interesting people and places throughout the area.
Jon has covered a wide range of stories for Newswatch 16. He won a Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters (PAB) award for his reports after he went to Haiti following the devastating earthquake in 2010 with a group from central Pennsylvania. He also won a PAB award for extensive on-air coverage of the historic flooding of 2011. And PAB honored him for his feature reporting of a World War II veteran who was the feature of a best-selling novel about his heroic story from the war.
Jon came to WNEP from WJAC-TV in Johnstown. There he served as weekend anchor and reporter. Jon was a key to WJAC’s coverage of the September 11, 2001 attack on America. United Airlines Flight 93 crashed only 20 miles from Johnstown in Somerset County. Jon was the first reporter at the crash site. He followed the story extensively for the weeks and months that followed. His accounts of the crash and his experiences covering it appear in several books about September 11 and its aftermath.
Jon grew up just west of the WNEP viewing area in St. Marys, Elk County.
He went to Syracuse University where he graduated with degrees in Broadcast Journalism and International Relations.
Jon is married to Newswatch 16 anchor Renie Workman. They live in Luzerne County. They have three children who keep the two quite busy in their free time!
